Supporting Nurses

Making the Match - Hiring of New Graduates

For new graduates it can be a challenge finding a place to begin a career.   An organization as large as Saskatoon Health Region can be a difficult place to figure out.  Therefore, Saskatoon Health Region has adopted a hiring process to make it easier for new nursing graduates to gain access to employment opportunities.

A panel of nursing managers, supported by the Human Resources Department, interviews interested nursing graduates and determines their eligibility and areas of interest.  Through the panel, appropriate vacancies are identified and graduates are matched up.

This process limits the need for graduates to make multiple applications for employment.

Gaining Experience - Senior Assistant Program

Building on the knowledge you acquire as a nursing student requires opportunities to put that knowledge to work while learning from those with experience.

Through the senior assistant program nursing students in the third year of their program are provided with opportunities for paid employment on nursing units.

In addition to the value of the experience gained participants have an opportunity to become known by a future employer and to earn income.

Career-Long Learning - Nurse Development

Nursing is a career where learning never stops. Saskatoon Health Region has an active Nursing Development department that provides ongoing learning opportunities for nurse.

This includes providing orientation workshops, promoting research based practice and supporting education days and information packages on a range of topics.

Opening Doors to New Opportunities - Specialized Training

Working in operating room environments is a challenging and exciting branch of nursing.  It is not for everyone but for those who seek this type of challenge the Health Region provides significant support.

After one year of experience Registered Nurses (RN) who want to work in operating rooms and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) interested in becoming operating room technicians are supported fully in undertaking the necessary training.

Critical care training is also available to RNs.  Participants in the training receive reimbursement for tuition, books and clinical training.
