Saskatoon Health Careers - Representative Workforce

About Representative Workforce

A Representative Workforce is where the working-age population of the broader community is represented throughout all occupational and classification levels in the Saskatoon Health Region.

A Representative Workforce DOES NOT mean special privileges or quotas.

Our Aim is to deliver specific initiatives that recruit, retain and facilitate employment of Aboriginal people.

Our Focus is on the Aboriginal population due to the following factors:

  • Saskatchewan is home to the second largest Aboriginal population per capita in Canada:
  • The Aboriginal population is the fastest growing labour force in Saskatchewan;
  • Aboriginal people are significantly underrepresented in the Saskatoon Health Region labour force.

These factors, coupled with the anticipated exodus of retirees from our workforce over the next 5 - 10 years, indicate that it is timely and important that we work together to build a Representative Workforce in the Saskatoon Health Region.

Message from Maura Davies, President and Chief Executive Officer, Saskatoon Health Region

Maura Davies

Maura Davies, President & Chief Executive Officer of Saskatoon Health Region, has identified Goals to "Transform the Work Experience" in the Saskatoon health Regionby focusing on:

  • a workforce that celebrates diversity and is representative of our population;
  • an organization that is respectful of Aboriginal people's cultural differences and treats people with respect and dignity; and
  • a community mobilized to improve health and eliminate health disparities of First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities

In the Spirit of a Shared Commitment

Saskatoon Health Careers - Representative WorkforceRepresentative Workforce language is included in the provisions of the Collective Agreements with the three unions - Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN), Local 333 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS).

The Representative Workforce Initiative was formally created in 1995 with the signing of the first Partnership Agreement between Saskatoon Health Region and First Nations and Métis Relations (FNMR), Government of Saskatchewan Department.

Saskatoon Health Careers - Representative WorkforceIn June 2005, the Partnership Agreement was renewed with 23 signing partners including Saskatoon Health Region and 17 Affiliates, SEIU, SUN, HSAS, SAHO and FNMR.

Representative Workforce activities focus on Aboriginal initiatives for the following reasons:

Demographics - Statistical data indicates that 13.3% of Saskatchewan's population is Aboriginal people, and this percentage is increasing; and, over the next decade, our workforce will require an increased number of skilled and qualified labour force due to the anticipated number of current employees who will be eligible for retirement in Saskatoon Health Region.  It makes good business sense to embrace Saskatchewan's unique demographic environment.

Saskatoon Health Careers - Representative WorkforceDiversity - Saskatoon Health Region recognizes that building diversity among our staff will increase our cultural competencies to better serve the needs of a culturally diverse client base.  Ongoing initiatives are in place and continue to be developed throughout the region to support the Representative Workforce commitment (refer to Employment & Retention Initiatives for details).

The Representative Workforce Initiative is based upon specific values and principles, one which is that all Saskatoon Health Region employees are hired based on meeting the skills and qualifications of each position.
