Step Into Health Careers Employment Program

Step Into Health Careers is an internal employment program offered within Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) which was developed in partnership with and continues to be supported by CanSask Career & Employment Services.

The program is designed to enhance participation of a Representative Workforce, with an emphasis on Aboriginal youth, to reflect current and future demographics within the region.  This initiative positions itself in alignment with the objectives of the SHR Corporate Strategic Plan 2007-2010 to increase the Representative Workforce from 2.7% to 4% by 2010.

The aim of this program is to provide individuals with the certificate training, work experience and in-house orientation required to become employed by Saskatoon Health Region.

Step Into Health Careers is looking for participants who:

  • Are Aboriginal Youth
  • Have a grade 12 or GED equivalent
  • Are unemployed or underemployed (work 20 hours/week or less)
  • Comply with a criminal records check
  • Are willing to participate with immunizations

The core components of past programs have included:

  • Employability Skills (Career Planning & Life Strategies)
  • Mentorship
  • Certificate Training
  • Basic Computer Training
  • TLR (Transfer, Lifting & Repositioning)
  • Safety Orientation
  • SHR Orientation
  • Aboriginal Awareness Training
  • Work Experience
  • Job Coaching

The program is directed by the departmental needs of the organization and is an opportunity for individuals to become familiar within the health care environment.  All the components of the program take place at all three acute care sites; St. Paul's Hospital, Royal University Hospital and Saskatoon City Hospital.

In past programs, participants have been given the opportunity to complete a Sterile Processing Technician Certificate, which was delivered internally through the department of Sterile Processing & Distribution.  This certificate qualified participants to work as Sterile Processing Workers and Operating Room Attendants.

In other programs, the participants completed the Food Safe Certificate to become qualified to work within Food & Nutrition Services and some completed work experience rotations as a Porter within Medical Imaging.

The physical space for the program and the offices of the Representative Workforce Consultants, Kelly Lee-Pelleter and Allison Laughren, are located at St. Paul's Hospital.
