Recreational Therapist

Recreational Therapists assess the recreational needs of clients, maintains accurate documentation and statistical data, plans and implements therapeutic programs, and may also provide in-service or training to family members, students, volunteers, and other hospital or organizational staff.

Recreational Therapists work in health and fitness centres, corporate fitness centres, physical therapy clinics, in private practise, or in hospitals and special care homes.

 

Training

What: 
Diploma in Therapeutic recreation
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, with a specialization in Therapeutic Recreation.

Where: 
SIAST, University of Alberta, University of Regina, University of Manitoba, Red Deer College

How Long: 
Diploma - 48 weeks
Degree - varied lengths (1 - 4 years, depending upon pre-requisites)

Entrance Requirements: 
Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 70% in the following subjects: English Language Arts A30, English Language Arts B30, one of Social Studies 30, History 30 or Native Studies 30, Mathematics A30 and Biology 30. (Basic computer knowledge is strongly recommended.)
